Like some other activities, with poker its hard to identify the right "spot". Sometimes we think were hitting the spot but really poker is just faking us.
This weekend started off really horrible for me. I dismissed the first few buy ins as just bad luck/running bad. A few buy ins more......ok im running really bad. After two days and 15buy ins i decided to take a really hard look at my game. Id also like to point out, thank u HEM for allowing me this luxury. At first glance my stats look ok. So my next session i really paid attention and though not reflected in my stats, i think i was just reaching in a lot of spots. I was really going after EVERY spot, instead of picking the best ones.
A lot of poker players fall into this trap. We watch the videos, read the books, even get the coaching and then for some reason we try to make every spot "that spot". The bottom line is 90% of players dont even win. A high percentage of winners, myself included are good, but not great. Our actual hand reading skills are not durrrresque, and we are just good at recognizing/exploiting situations for profit.
Trouble starts to happen when we think that we have to hit the spot every time. I fell into this trap this weekend, and have thankfully addressed it and am halfway back to not losing money. Some spots just cant be hit or are hit very rarely and thats when u just gotta say f it and get urs.
